Our final assignment in Junior Communications Studio was to choose an event—conference, festival, or exhibition—and create a brand and additional assets for it. I picked the Pittsburgh Renaissance Festival, but renamed it to Steelshire for a more unique and less wordy title.

I absolutely loved working on this project. Anytime I get to work with type at a hyper-detailed level, I’m pretty much over the moon. I developed a lot of new skills on this project, too, such as making animated logotypes and pitching to clients.

Getting to dive deep into brand strategy was new to me, but I really enjoyed it! I always try to make design choices with purpose, and this was essentially an extension of that.

After developing the brand, I applied it to various assets, including a poster and tickets. It was fun to get to play in a playground I built for myself!

Process

Prior to this project, I had lost touch with a lot of my analog design process. But I went back to pen and paper to sketch logotypes, and something clicked back into place for me. Moving forward, I’m definitely going to use analog sketching in my process more often!
