The final assignment in the calligraphy class I took at Carnegie Mellon was to make a Jabberwocky book, with one stanza on each page, and each page in a different style of roman calligraphy.
Traditional calligraphy is not something I had a ton of experience with before I took this class, but I really enjoyed how meditative it is. And it definitely helped to improve my hand lettering and type design skills!
I enjoyed coming up with new ways to modify the calligraphic alphabet we had spent the semester learning for this project. Someday maybe I’ll turn some of them into fonts...
This book took a lot of drafting by hand. After determining styles, I wrote out each word in its according style on scratch paper, then cut out and arranged each word to get proper spacing before writing on the final paper.
