2022

In the summer of 2022, I challenged myself to redesign one book cover every day for 100 consecutive days. It was incredible to see my skills grow over such a short period of time.

At the beginning of the challenge, I made a list of 100 books. Most of them were books I had read, but I also included some well-known books I hadn’t read yet. Each morning, I would roll two ten-sided dice (one for the ones column and one for the tens column) to determine which book I would be designing that day. I usually spent most of the morning working on the design, though depending on the book, sometimes it only took me about an hour and other times it took me most of the day.

I definitely started to get burnt out by the end, but I learned a lot from this challenge. From Photoshop effects like gradient maps and layer styles to niche elements of illustration like how to draw blood, this challenge taught me a lot about specific techniques. I also learned about what makes a better book cover than others and a LOT about self-discipline.

Shown on this page are my absolute favorite covers, but all of them are visible on my Instagram @elliscarsonjones.
